The Process

The photographs for the Somme Project are all taken on 120mm film, then processed and printed in a traditional darkroom.

The film types used vary according to the light and conditions on the day, but mostly they are PAN F, HP4 or HP5 all manufactured by Ilford Photographic.

The papers used in printing also vary, but the type of print being produced for the Somme Project is what is commonly called a Fibre Based print. Sometimes toning is also performed on the print surface.

The photographs on the web site are scanned from master prints, but don't really show the full quality of a
hand-finished print.

The cameras used are a Rolleiflex f2.8 & Hasselblad 500CM with some Support from a 35mm Leica.

More info about these processes and applications can be found at www.ilfordphoto.com or the Internet.
